Every time Brighton & Hove Albion and Crystal Palace play each other, there are questions about the origins of the bitter rivalry between teams whose 43-kilometre separation means they are in different regions.
When the clubs meet again at the Amex Stadium on Sunday (2pm GMT), it will be the first edition of the match between Brighton’s Fabian Hurzeler and Palace’s Oliver Glasner – a coach whom the Albion boss holds in high regard since their time in Germany. .
Hurzeler was St Pauli’s boss and finally got a taste of the truth when the sides drew 1-1 at Selhurst Park last season, while Glasner took over as Palace manager 16 days after their 4-1 defeat at Brighton on February 3.
Here are some history lessons the pair were told, as well as a look at some of the most memorable moments between Brighton and Palace.

There was a rivalry between the teams in the mid-1970s, and confusion over Palace’s ‘Eagles’ name by Brighton fans led Albion to adopt their own name – the Seagulls – against Palace.
In the 1976/77 season, the teams played in the first ever FA Cup which went to three quarters before Palace won 1-0.
Two of the most impressive figures were in the stands: Brighton’s Alan Mullery, Palace’s Terry Venables. The pair were teammates at Tottenham as players, with Spurs manager Bill Nicholson choosing Mullery over Venables as captain.
Mullery was furious after Albion lost the trophy. His captain, Brian Horton, had a penalty denied by goalkeeper Ron Challis before it was saved, and Brighton’s legendary player Peter Ward also had a goal.
The manager produced an immortal image where he displayed the “V” sign at the Palace’s regular match, complained to Challis and changed the opposition, adding: “Palace is not suitable.”

Martin Hinshelwood, the Palace player at the time who went on to become a respected youth coach at Brighton and briefly managed the Seagulls in 2002, noted that Venables “always seemed to outshine Alan.”
Palace finished two points ahead of Brighton as both teams were promoted from the Third Division that year, and an enduring story of promotion disputes, surprise matches and fan animosity began.
Among them, Palace beat Mullery’s Brighton to the title in 1978/79 when both teams were promoted, and five penalties were awarded in 27 minutes in Palace’s 2-1 win in 1989, including Ian’s misplaced spot. Wright, who was rejected by Brighton as a child because of his underweight.
Palace lost eight and drew two in 10 derbies between 1979 and 1986, but had bragging rights between 1990 and 2001, spending three seasons in the Premier League and the rest in the second tier while Brighton were almost forgotten. other end of EFL.
After almost going out of business and staying in the EFL during the 1996/97 season, Albion lived in two temporary homes before moving to the Amex Stadium in 2011.
In 1976-77, Crystal Palace & Brighton played 5 times (including 3 FA Cup games!) & bad blood between managers Terry Venables and Alan Mullery led to a rivalry between the teams.

Their nearly 13-year wait to play Palace again came to an end on a perfect day for the home fans at Selhurst Park, who saw a 5-0 second-half thrashing, with future England international Andy Johnson bagging a hat-trick. .
Palace have lost just once in eight meetings with a 1-0 defeat at Selhurst Park in 2005 and became the first team to beat Brighton at the Amex Stadium, beating them there in the 2013 Championship semi-finals.
Jordan Ayew scored the only goal of the game in Palace’s first Premier League win at Brighton in 2020, and the exciting performance became the hallmark of the game in the next four games, three of which were decided by 90th-minute goals.
Brighton’s big win over 10 months ago is the only time either team has won by more than 11 goals in the last 11 games between them, with Hinshelwood’s great nephew, Jack, one of the winners on the occasion.
Palace’s final defeat at Brighton also led to their manager leaving: Patrick Vieira’s last game in charge was a 1-0 defeat at the Amex Stadium in March 2023, while their last defeat there last season was Roy Hodgson’s last. about his time.

Reports tend to call the game the ‘M23 derby’ referring to the route between Brighton and London. A private road that provides direct access to the A23.
In the spirit of crime, let’s start with a photo at the original home of Brighton’s Goldstone Ground, which was watched by a crowd of more than 27,000 in the Third Stage.
Mr Mullery joked that Venables was planning to have smoke bombs thrown onto the pitch, feeling that fan interference had prevented his team from moving.
As is often the case in favor of both sides, Palace took the lead against Jim Cannon’s play. Brighton quickly took the lead through Kenny Sansom’s goal.
An early goal from Ian Wright, a red card for Brighton’s Mike Trusson and a penalty from Mark Bright put Palace 2-0 up and it looked to be going well despite Bright and Wright missing consecutive penalties.
Alan Curbishley responded immediately after stoppage time behind defender John Pemberton to slot a penalty over the bar for the hosts. Palace reached the top flight of the season, while Brighton played relegation but survived.

Steve Coppell was Palace’s manager during the five-penalty game, and his job when the teams met again after a 13-year hiatus was to rescue Albion from a difficult start to their Championship season.
Unfortunately for Brighton, Coppell’s first game in charge only cemented his status as a Palace legend, with Johnson scoring twice in the first half. Palace’s current sporting director Dougie Freedman then scored, as did Julian Gray Johnson who completed his hat-trick.
As Palace finished 14th, Coppell showed his ability to revive Brighton’s season, taking their unbeaten run to the last day of the season.
It was Brighton’s first win at Palace for more than seven years, their first at home for 25 years, their first at the Amex Stadium and their only win in the competition in eight attempts between 2005 and 2017.
Spain midfielder David Lopez scored an impressive free-kick between the goals for Leo Ulloa. Brighton were chasing a place in the Championship at the time, while Palace were hoping for promotion.

Palace had the last laugh of the season in the last game of the Championship.
Trailing 0-0 at Selhurst Park, two goals from Wilfried Zaha inside 20 minutes of the second half gave the visitors a 2-0 victory, with the manager who orchestrated Brighton’s promotion to League One and led them to their new home, the Gus. Poyet, leaving The Seagulls after two days.
Ian Holloway led Palace to victory over Watford in the last game, and has been in the Premier League ever since.
The strong track record between these teams shows how their games have been viewed and their results over the years.
The exact figures are disputed, but Brighton have won 42 to Palace’s 38, according to 11v11.comand 31 finishes as drawings.
