According to ABC News, police say the shooter was wearing a ski mask and fled down the street near West 55th St. The gunman was described as a thin man, standing about 6-foot-1 and wearing all black. Sources told Fox News that the shooting was not random.

Without identifying the victim, the New York City Police Department confirmed to Fox News Digital that it was a 50-year-old man. shot in the chest outside the Hilton Hotel on 6th Ave. around 6:46 am and was sent to Mt. Sinai West, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing.

Thompson worked at UnitedHealth for more than 20 years and is based out of the company’s headquarters in Minnetonka, Minnesota, according to his LinkedIn page. He was named CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz shared a statement on X saying, “This is terrible news and a terrible loss for Minnesota’s business and health care workers. Minnesota sends our prayers to Brian’s family and the UnitedHealthcare team.”

Thompson joined UnitedHealth Group in 2004 and has held various positions during his career.

He served as chief financial officer for several of the firm’s businesses, including employer and individual, community and government, and Medicare and retirement divisions.

Thompson also worked as a financial manager for UnitedHealthcare employers and private businesses and as a director of corporate development.

UnitedHealthcare is a division within the UnitedHealth Group. An American Medical Association (AMA) report from 2023 found that UnitedHealthGroup is the largest health insurer by market share, with 14% of the health insurance market.

Prior to joining UnitedHealth, Thompson held management positions at PwC in the auditing and transaction advisory services division.

He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1997 with a degree in accounting and was named the oldest and most senior by the university by the Iowa Society of CPAs.

UnitedHealth has canceled the remaining investor day after the incident. UnitedHealth CEO Andrew Witty said, “We are dealing with a serious medical issue with one of our team members, and as a result, I am afraid we will be canceling the event today.”

Thompson is survived by his wife Paulette ‘Pauley’ Thompson, 51, and their two children. They lived together in a $1.5 million family home in Maple Grove, Minn., according to the Daily Mail.
