The toxic siblings of prophecy are the best part of sisterhood

If: You: Prophecy didn’t quite get into the cultural fervor that Sand dune movies have, or other HBO shows are similar in some way, Game of Thrones— that could be because it’s almost completely full characters that can be very hard to root for.

It is a quality that is needed to drive the story. Although we know where things are going in 10,000 years, the entrenched importance of the Bene Gesserit; Harkonen House pale, creeping power; the decline of emperor Shaddam Tan Corino; The Rise of PaulOral Al Ghaib” Atreides –Prophecy throws us into stormy, uncertain times.

Most importantly, we know ProphecyThe Sisterhood will one day become the Bene Gesserit. But we don’t know how or when that will happen, or who will lead them there. We also don’t know how they will overcome the greatest threat of their existence so far, which is the slippery man. in who appears to be fulfilling the deathbed prophecy left by Raquella, the founder of the Sisterhood 30 years ago.

This is a show that wants you to travel, even if you haven’t read any Sand dune books or watch Denis Villeneuve’s films. So it makes the story a fairly straightforward power struggle, while giving us characters carefully painted in shades of gray, some darker than others pre-existing Sand dune Fans will obviously know more mythology, but the signature elements are explained for newcomers. There’s a lot of talk about sandworms, for example, and Prophecy finds ways to give us visuals to go along with it even though it doesn’t take place on Arrakis.

As for the characters we really love to hate; Prophecys supposed protagonist, but her thirst for power made her unlikable from the start. Her sister and Sisterhood member Tula is much softer on the outside, but she can be manipulated into doing terrible things as well as acting on her worst impulses.

Meanwhile, Corrino, another familiar name, is such an unstable leader that he’s allowed Desmond Hart, a brutal soldier with mysterious gifts, to take the throne at gunpoint the value of using terror as a coercive tactic. Meanwhile, Hart still doesn’t have a scene that doesn’t leave the audience gasping, whether he’s going head to toe. Playing games with Valya or using her strange abilities to burn enemies from the inside.

These are opposites You: Prophecyand the main players, who cannot trust most of the other people around them, are united by their common goals. This leads to a relationship that is as unhealthy as the means they use to achieve those goals there is no bond more toxic than that between Valya and Tula.

Thanks to a flashback episode (brilliantly titled “Sisterhood Above All,” Sisterhood’s Creed , but also a real-life sibling theme in the mix), we know that the Harkone sisters grew up on an icy wasteland marked by dots; fur trade. The Harkonnens were stripped of their Great House status due to a rumor started by the House of Atreides, Valya says, of cowardice on the battlefield during the robot wars that took place over 100 years ago. Prophecythe main story of

This injustice, or perceived injustice, becomes young Valya’s obsession, and his zeal convinces Tula and Valya’s beloved brother, Griffin, to try to settle the score with the Atreides. He is killed for his efforts, and this changes the entire dynamic of the Harkonnen family. An even more angry Valya, who has already begun to develop “The Voice”, is sent to study with the Sisterhood, so it is up to Tula to avenge Griffin’s death loved her brother, it is understandable that her decision to betroth one Atreides and then slaughter dozens of his family members was made Thanks to Valya’s influence.

The traumatic bond continued when Tula followed Valya into the Sisterhood, and Valya used the Voice to kill her rival Dorothea, a crime Tula later helped cover up, becoming the second Mother High of the Sisterhood.

Recently on the show, Valya pressured Tula into persuading her favorite young teacher, Lila, to undergo a dangerous ritual, essentially visiting the land of the dead to connect with her ancestor, Rakella, to learn more about that more terrifying prophecy dies for his efforts… sort of, since Tula was able to bring him back to life using spices and forbidden technology, another secret that binds Harkone sisters.

The “you vs. the world” mentality that helped convince Tula to join Valya in the Sisterhood has now expanded to become more of a “Sisterhood vs. the World”, though Valya makes political maneuvers while Tula remains in the Sisterhood. sports grounds. While Valya does her best to manipulate the Emperor and find out Desmond’s weaknesses, Tula has her hands full with Lila’s situation and the increasingly active rebellion among the Rebels.

It’s telling that Tula, the seemingly milder of the Harkone sisters, is also the most murderous. Yes, Valya had Dorothea cut her throat, but Tula deliberately poisoned dozens of Atreides, and just this week saw her kill a believer who came uncomfortably close to uncovering the lie that the Harkonnens had hidden within an entire organization.the truth to say

For most of the different planets with Valya and Tula You: Prophecythere wasn’t much time for tender moments, not that they would share. The closest we got to adult versions of the characters came in this week’s “Twice Born,” when Valya, running out of options in the battle with Desmond, began texting Tula, asking her for sisterly support, then. thought better of it.

But was it another manipulation? more ammo as Valya plows through her goal of Sisterhood rule in the Imperium rather than a genuine need for familial love. With only two episodes to go, there’s no telling which Harkone sister will live, die, or betray… or worse, maybe even the character that will elevate the Sisterhood to the Bene Gesserit. We’ll be looking forward to seeing how it plays out.

new episodes of You: Prophecy arrived Sundays on HBO and Max.
