Jennifer Crumbley, the convicted mother of the Oxford school shooterasked a judge to release her from prison, arguing that it would be “grossly unfair and unjust” to keep her locked up during her ongoing appeals process.
The request to be released came after Crumbley was convicted four counts of involuntary manslaughter for the son of the shooting, Ethan, which took place on November 30, 2021. The shooting at Oxford High School killed 16-year-old Tate Myre; Justin Shilling, 16; Hana Santa Juliana, 14; and Madisyn Baldwin, 17, and seven others wounded. Her husband, James Crumbley, was later convicted of the same charges.
Crumbley’s attorney, Michael Deszi, filed a motion Thursday in Oakland County Circuit Court, arguing that Crumbley is not a “flight risk” and “poses no danger to the public.”
“This case has gotten bogged down starting with the prosecution’s excessive charge of involuntary manslaughter of a father for the intentional criminal acts of his son, who was charged and treated as an adult in the eyes of the law,” he wrote Deszi in the court file.

Deszi argued that Crumbley should not be locked up until his case comes up Michigan Supreme Court.
“… It would be grossly unfair and unjust to keep Ms. Crumbley locked up for years while this matter continues slowly, probably for years, before the appeals courts,” Dezsi wrote, noting that she has already been locked up for more three years old years

“Given the patently tenuous nature of these charges, the prosecution should not reap the reward of lengthy unlawful imprisonment before the Michigan Supreme Court can hear and decide this case,” he said.
In a statement Thursday, Oakland County Chief Assistant Prosecutor David Williams said Jennifer Crumbley should remain locked up because of her actions, not the actions of her 15-year-old son.
“Jennifer Crumbley was tried by a jury of her peers for her own actions and inactions that led to the shooting at Oxford High School, not her son’s actions,” he said.
“A jury of 12 heard testimony and reviewed countless pieces of evidence before they unanimously found her guilty, and the judge sentenced her accordingly,” he said. “This was an egregious set of facts that resulted in a conviction along with a 10 to 15 year prison term.”
The Crumbley parents made history as the first parents to be convicted a mass shooting committed by his son.
Jennifer was sentenced to serve 10 to 15 years in prison after an Oakland County courtroom heard evidence arguing that the now 46-year-old ignored her son’s cries for help over the years prior to the shooting.
