Almost all eggs sold in Michigan from before the New Year must come from cage-free birds, although egg prices continue to rise.
Michigan lawmakers amended the Animal Industry Act in 2019, requiring shell eggs from chickens, ducks and other birds sold in the state to come from cage-free homes, effective December 31, 2024.
However, the new law does not cover the sale of shellfish eggs produced on a farm with fewer than 3,000 laying hens, or liquid or cooked eggs.
But for the farms involved, the law prohibits business owners from selling eggs from laying hens if care is not taken while standing in a facility used by hens.
EGG PRICES ARE HIGH AND WILL CONTINUE TO 2025
The the law also says so that chickens are not confined or tied in such a way that they cannot lie down, stand up, extend their arms fully or turn around freely.
Many of the guidelines for cage-free eggs were established in the United Egg Producers 2017 regulations, which set standards for the amount of space that must be provided for eggs to qualify as cage-free.
Gov. Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment on the new law.
THAT’S WHY GROCERS ARE RAISING PRICES
The news comes when egg prices continue to rise, and business experts predict that these high costs will continue until 2025, especially if the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), also known as “bird flu”, continues.
Wells Fargo Agri-Food Institute Sector Manager Kevin Bergquist said egg prices have increased since 2023 due to a combination of seasonal price increases during the holidays and egg disruption due to bird flu.
Prices last year “generally” remained above 2023 prices and “often exceeded egg prices from 2022, which was when HPAI held the egg market,” according to Bergquist.
