Jaime Munguia was stunned by Bruno Surace, a fighter with only four knockouts, on Saturday night in the sixth round of their fight at Estadio Caliente in Tijuana, Mexico.
What made this knockout of Surace (26-0-2, 5 KOs) even more impressive was that he had to take off in the second round to come back to KO Munguia with one punch in the sixth round.
What does this say about Canelo Alvarez? Although he was unable to knock out Munguia (44-2, 35 KOs) when they fought on May 4 in Las Vegas. Canelo defeated Mugnuia by 12th decision, and he didn’t come close to knocking him out.
Losing in front of his hometown fans in Tijuana, Mexico, must have been a bitter pill for Munguia to swallow because they all saw what happened. His popularity is declining in Mexico now.
Edgar Berlanga took the news of Munguia’s loss hard. He was expected to fight him following the Mexico vs. Puerto Rico match at the PPV. Berlanga complained that Munguia messed up the bag, which is a good word.
Surace beat Berlanga for the way he fought tonight. He could work for him just as easily as he did for Mulunguia.
A match between them on PPV is not going to sell, as both guys are losing. It would be impossible to sell, especially when one of them didn’t even try to win but just came to survive.
All New York-born Berlanga has to do is summon Surace, and if he can’t find him, fight Caleb Plant. There is no Berlanga bag. Canelo won’t fight him again, and Mulunguia won’t fight either.
SMH pa!!!! Mungia hit the bag!!!!!
