Winnie the PoohA number Popey:A number Machine WillyA number of these days seems to be an instant recognizable character becomes a public domain, immediately someone turns them into a horror movieWhy is it why it is, and what is the case with such staff?
To get these answers, IO9 spoke to Steven Lamort. He is the co-author and the director SeglingSteamboat Willie Slasher’s film, which is in theaters on April 2. How did we cover up in the first half of our interview? It’s a movie that can be a love letter to Disney but it doesn’t come without some guards. In order to avoid judicial, the films love Segling You have to adhere to a few simple but important guidelines, which creates a very interesting exercise in the story.
Because this is a horror movie of Lamorte’s second public domain. He made a shocking themed film Means one In 2022, we talked to him about all that and more. You can see the line between legal and “disney lawyers when you watch Segling On April 2. Check the interview below.
This interview was edited for length and clarity.
Germain Lussier, IO9. Thus, by making a film about Grinch, you are a kind of familiar with public domain films. When did you hear that? Machine Willy was coming and how was you that you were involved in it?
Steven Lamorte: Thus was the type of viral sensation Means oneWe knew we had to do further. I don’t know what will happen, but we knew we were going to do something. And I really struggled to find out what the project would be. My wife said: “Well, don’t worry about characters or IP or any of those things. And I said. So I said: “Let’s make the dust off the concept and see that there is something there.”
I am from the city of New York. I have been swimming by Staten Island Ferry in thousands of times, returning to all the hours of the night and moving to college where I went to the movie school. And so I did a little research and said: “Well, which characters come to a public domain that can fit in it?” And then it became clear that Machine Willy Next was up. So, in no way it is going to let him go to the public domain. But let’s do this idea, we sit on the shelves, let them marinn and see what happens. And then, when we approach it, it became more and more clear that the murderer could really be a steamer Oley. And by doing my ferry history study, Staten Island Ferry was once fed by steam. It’s like a perfect mixture. And you have installed it on the background of the world’s largest city in New York. How can it be better?
Io9. Yes, exactly. That’s great. So you have this idea, it’s gathering, but with something like Disney IP like Machine WillyIt’s clear that you are the only one who sees it and notices it. And we know that there is at least one more film like this. At that moment it becomes a race. You follow these other movies and it’s important, are you the first? I’m curious if it’s a consideration when you’re looking for funding and all those stuff.
Lambort: I don’t know if it’s every race. I think it’s a race if you try to capture clicks or titles or just attract attention. I mean our goal when we started to make this movie something funny and funny. Something that truly respected character and did justice. Because we didn’t want to do Machine Willy– The post film that freely follows the design. We wanted to do something that was a creative feature where he was evil, where he was small, and we knew that we would take time to do the right and correctly. Not only did we want to wait until he was in a fully public. “
I mean if you have ever seen a Terror A movie they will spend a whole week at the murder just to get right. And when we learned that we were just not to make it, but we did it at the level that IP justice carried out IP. So it wasn’t important to us that the first one went out. It was the unaware that we did it right, and that we were really proud of the film we had made.
Io9. So what is the line? Is there anything you can’t legally do? And how close are, and what steps are the lawyers treated for the process? There is also something you have tried to do but maybe they couldn’t.
Lamorte: Well I mean, I don’t want to enter anything we couldn’t do. Because part of it will surprise you. And if we spend more money legally, maybe we can do it in the future. So I will not enter it. But there are definitely certain guidelines given to us from the front, as far as the difference between Steamboat Willie and Mickey Mouse. “What will happen in the public domain when the film will come out, and in 2024 entered a public domain in the public domain?” It’s appropriate. And then really just looking at it and making sure we are following the letter of law. That we do not violate the trademark or try to create a mess in the market.
We don’t want children to see the movie. We don’t want people to think this is Mickey Mouse. We do not want people to think that this is officially imposed on any large corporation. So a lot of it is just hyper-focused on what is cleared and then remaining away. Anything else that the line is the line more. “Is that a tribute to a loving? We changed it a little. And here … a woman named blue clothes, no one can have it, isn’t it?
Io9. (Laughs) correct.
Lamorte: That’s a lot of things. And in fact, it became really easy to follow when we gathered in the mind that Disney, as a concept, does not exist in the world of the film. Thus, at that moment it allows you to import calms because no one has ever heard of this character or this movie. And then, if you are inside and you are watching something, out of context, the reference can not make sense. But in the context of this world, we are like. “Ah, yes, Disney does not exist.” Therefore, everything is a fair game.
Io9. Oh, cool. So you look legal from every step, just to make sure, but the foundation’s strong guidelines.
Lamorte: THAT’S RESPONSIBILITY AND IT IS IMPORTANT, Especially after Means one Many people said Means one could not be done. I was 10 years that I would hit that movie. And when the time reached this, it was the same when industry specialists and qualified individuals look like. “Don’t do it.” But I didn’t get anywhere in life, it’s safe to play, isn’t it? So we said. And we are ready to put that work. And finally, it has forced us to remain the source material that increased at all. Thus, the guidelines did not end there as a limit as the script remains.
io9: Gotcha. Now it can be obvious, but I’m still curious what your prospect is. When this is such an image of the public domain, why instinct immediately do Gory Slasher Horror Movie? It’s just because it’s as 180 degrees than we know. Tell me a little like me why you think that’s what we see so much today.
Lamorte: Well, I think there are many reasons that independent manufacturers are trying to redistribute these characters. You can say from the point of view of business, there is always money in horror, right. And if you are an independent cinema, you can force two boys to attack the snake monster, or two boys can attack what people have heard about. It’s a brand recognition, it’s true. Many say they want original stories, but when they know the nature, it creates a factor of curiosity. It helps to separate the film, as we do not have a marketing budget to teach you who Mike Jones, the adventurer. But if it’s “Indiana Jones”, the chances of someone heard of that person, and may it help sell your film.
But from my point of view, from where I come from Steamboat Willie, Mickey Mouse, means that such characters, we have this nostalgia. We have this connection. This early love. But there is no more steamed Willy’s content to be addressed to the older audience. And I don’t watch cartoons anymore … I think it’s now this thing I love now I love a little shocking and I put them together. Nostalgia reblogged in me.
And I don’t think there are adults that see in a theme park on Mickey Mouse or Steamboat Willie that doesn’t want to hug her. And I have to tell you, for the first time David Howard Thornton came out in the suit, he received clutches, he received four walks in the blood. And he is like. “Okay, what do you want me to do first?” I’m like. “You hug me, you’re a big fur goofball, how I want to just squeeze you.” She is just very beautiful. Teeth and claws, his eyes are black.
And I mean, David’s super beautiful. But when he walked through the door, the sun shone behind him, you are like “My God, it’s six feet five rats monster.” And he is just fluffy and fur, and he actually carries out that the staff started to arrange. I’m like. So, I think the horror is terrified, there is definitely a financial side in it. But I think we love horror, we love these characters, and nostalgia strikes differently. Horror is such a fun way to join something you love.
