Squid Game: returns in just a few weeksonce again starring its Emmy Award-winning star, Lee Jung-jaewho fans now know better thanks to the addition of Disney+ Star Wars series The Acolyte:. Lee’s character Squid Game:Gi-hoon is an unlikely hero in the first season. he’s a selfish gambler who joins the deadly competition out of desperation and somehow stumbles upon the winner. In the second season, which picks up several years later, he rejoins the game, hoping to destroy the Squid Game organization from the inside out.
As you can imagine, Gi-hoon has changed a lot from the irresponsible goof around stealing money from his mother’s bank account that we met at the beginning of the first season; Going back to season two, it’s almost like meeting a whole new character.
Lately Squid Game 2 at a press roundtable, Lee spoke to a group of reporters, including io9, about how Gi-hoon has evolved. He’s definitely stuck with survivor’s guilt and PTSD, and he’s a haunted but determined man.
“It was actually a lot harder for me to portray a darker Gi-hoon,” Lee explained through a translator on achieving his sole goal of saving people and ending the game.”
He continued. “So I thought, ‘I’m trying to put myself in his place, so who else can I ask for advice? But me?’ I thought that since his only goal in season two is to get out alive with his (fellow) rivals, it would really help if I got a better and deeper understanding of the other characters’ stories , but a lot is altruistic. So, I realized that, (and) it made it easier for me to portray this character.”
At the same round table, returning actor Lee Seo-Hwan, we met him as Gi-Hoon’s racetrack friend Jung-Bae in the first season; In Season 2, he becomes Player 456’s sidekick after entering the game as Player 390—he said he didn’t feel much pressure to return. Squid Game:although it suddenly becomes such a global phenomenon.
“I didn’t really feel the pressure because we already created our characters in the first season, so we didn’t create a new one this time,” he said.(Hwang Dong-hyuk) I wanted to continue with the character that I created in the first season. So I actually felt very comfortable filming and portraying my character.”
He continued. “And we have these A-listers, very experienced actors in the cast, so I knew I could do my job well and then everything else would go so smoothly because they’re all such great actors. And I loved watching their performances. even on days when I didn’t have scenes, I’d just go to the studio to watch other people play because it was so much fun to watch.”
He finished with a joke. “And we have a lot of good food there, so I love that too. So I think that’s when I feel the most pressure, like these interviews and the clowns. I get a lot of pressure from this.” :
Squid Game: The second season will arrive on Netflix on December 26th.
