In the latest update from the Proteas men’s cricket team, the left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj he was suspended for the remaining One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan. Maharaj suffered a left side injury, as confirmed by medical scans, and will return home to Durban to begin his recovery.
Keshav Maharaj to return home for recuperation
The injury means that Maharaj will miss the upcoming matches and his condition will be reviewed before the Test match against Pakistan. Stepping into his shoes for the last two ODIs is the left-arm spinner Bjorn Fortuin.
“Keshav Maharaj has been ruled out for the remainder of the One-Day International (ODI) against Pakistan after scans revealed a left hamstring strain. He has returned home to Durban for recuperation and will be reassessed before the Test against Pakistan. Bjorn Fortuin has been named as his replacement. The last two ODIs,” Proteas men’s official referees have written their statements.
Maharaj suffered the injury just before the start of the two home Tests which are crucial in their quest to reach the finals of the 2023-25 World Test Championship (WTC). South Africa is currently at the top of the table with a score of 63.33.

What if Maharaj fails to regain his fitness ahead of the Pakistan Tests?
Although the severity of Maharaj’s injury is not yet known, it adds to the long list of injured South African bowlers. Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a broken finger in the T20Is against Pakistan; Gerald Coetzeeit is All the best out until January 2025 with groin and hip problems respectively; Nandre Burger He is out of the team due to a broken back.
So now, Dan Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy and the two spinners who are in contention for the upcoming Tests, if Maharaj is not allowed.
