Washington, DCThe man’s attack on the pilot’s chest prompted an emergency intervention on the plane, officials said.
Kedus Yacob Damtew, 38, was aboard a United Airlines flight on June 12, 2024, from Houston to Newark, New Jersey, when he allegedly threatened and assaulted a flight attendant, according to a news release from the U.S. attorney’s office in New York. Jersey.
Damtew was charged in federal court in Newark on Tuesday with one count of interfering with flight attendants and attendants by assaulting or threatening them. He allegedly took off his shirt shortly before landing and “pushed his bare chest at the pilot” before “lying” the employee “at the exit door” while yelling threats to abuse him, according to the complaint.
Officials said they “also blew up the plane’s oven” during the riots.

The 38-year-old man from Washington, DC, continued to threaten the pilot, authorities said. He says he followed her behind of the plane and continued to “throw a cup of water” at the worker.
The elders said another flight attendant called for help over the plane’s public address system, prompting several passengers to help protect Damtew on the last lines of the flight until the plane landed in Newark.

Damtew appeared in DC federal court Tuesday before District Judge Matthew J. Sharbaugh and was released.

He faces up to 20 years in prison in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
