Trainer Stephen Edwards believes that Terence Crawford has enough size, strength, form, and technical ability to move up to 168 and defeat unifying super middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez.
Edwards thinks Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) couldn’t beat David Benavidez, David Morrell, Artur Beterbiev, or Dmitry Bivol. These guys are too big and too technical for the 37-year-old Crawford. But the 34-year-old Canelo (62-2-2, 39 KOs) is starting to show his age, and he’s getting the better of Crawford.
Canelo will turn 35 on July 18, and has failed to take out his last six opponents. His last knockout came three years ago against Caleb Plant on November 6, 2021.
The Mexican star has not indicated that he will fight Crawford, and he will not agree to the match unless he sees that he can win. His net worth is estimated at $250 million. So, whatever money Turki Alalshikh could offer Alvarez would not persuade him to take the Crawford fight unless he wanted to. He has enough dough to be rich for the rest of his life, and he can continue to make millions in every fight, easily countered.
“Yes, I think he can go to 168 and fight other people. Do I think he can fight Benavidez or Morrell? No, they are too big, too talented, too tall. That would be too much to handle,” said Stephen Edwards WarSpeaking of Terence Crawford being too young to fight Benavidez or Morrell at super middleweight.
“Canelo comes from the smaller scales and is the same height as Crawford. I think Crawford is a little taller. Crawford’s arms are much longer, and he has a better fuel tank. I have never seen Crawford tired.
“Canelo lets guys off the hook these days, when they’re running well, he stops them. Now, he’s letting them off the hook because he doesn’t have that extra kick in his fuel tank. If Bud fought Canelo at 168, Bud would be full of calories. He can eat whatever he wants to eat at any time.” every day,” said Edwards.
Crawford is getting old, too, at 37 years old, and he almost lost his debut at 154 against Israil Madrimov on August 3rd. He won’t be able to win against Canelo with the weak shots he throws against Madrimov. These punches looked weak compared to when they fought at 147, 140 and 135.
The judges will give Canelo a run against Crawford, even if he is tired. If Canelo’s shots are tough, then he’s going to win. Crawford doesn’t hit as hard as Jermell Charlo or Erislandy Lara, and those guys were very smart against Canelo.
“His strength can’t be good. He needs to come in the ring at 159 or 160 lbs. There’s no need to go in at 168 because that’s the weight limit. He needs to be quick in this fight,” Edwards said of Crawford.
“I told him (Crawford), ‘That fight you had that night (against Viktor Postol at 140, eight years ago on July 23, 2016), is the fight that will beat Canelo.’ He kind of smiled. I think Bud is smart, and sometimes, when you’re smart, you don’t know you’re smart. He can change when he’s fighting.”
The fight with Viktor Postol was a long time ago when Crawford was 28 years old. He is now 37 years old, and he does not look as young, quick, or as fast as he was in the Postol fight. Crawford is old. So, to compare this version of Crawford to the one that fought Postol to use as an argument for why he beat Canelo is absurd. That version of Crawford doesn’t exist anymore.
That was another person. If he was a boxer like Artur Beterbiev, it wouldn’t be a problem that Crawford is not as young as he used to be. He is not very fast and wins his fights on speed, flexibility, and boxing skills. This will not be enough for his body to beat Canelo, and the judges will not do him any favors.
“I don’t think he can beat guys like Bivol and Beterbiev. I think it’s too much, but Canelo,” said Edwards. “He’s a great fighter, but my eyes tell me he’s a little slow.” Canelo who fought Berlanga. Three years ago, Canelo knocked out Berlanga. That’s not a fight. That is the killing of people.
“That he let Berlanga go too far. He let Mulunguia go too far. He let Charlo go too far. Bud’s movement, conditioning, and power. Bud is stronger than people think. I’m not saying he’s stronger than Canelo. He’s strong enough. It’s not a competition a scale lifter,” said Edwards.
