One of the most persistent concerns in the age of AI is what robots will do to take our works. How justified is this fear? remains to be seenbut we are already witnessing some level of substitution certain areas. Even niche activities are at risk. For example, the world of OnlyFans chats is already being disrupted.
What? are Only the fans chatter, you say.WIRED earlier this year published An interesting investigation into the world of gig workers who get paid to impersonate the highest-grossing OnlyFans creators in the industry, called “chatters”.
A big part of OnlyFans’ appeal, or so I’m told, is that its creators seem to interact directly with their fans, exchanging messages and sometimes chatting for hours on end.
Of course, with thousands of ongoing DM conversations, one creator only has so many hours in a day.To manage the flood of love messages, it’s become common to hand off conversations to “chatters” who are paid for real talent.
These interviewers were mostly contractors from the Philippines, Pakistan, India, and other countries with significantly lower salary expectations than the U.S. But increasingly, human conversations are being replaced by AI-generated booths.
A number of different startups now sell entry to these AI chatterboxes and other generative AI tools, and they say business is booming.
“A lot of creators are like, hey, there’s a need,” says Kunal Anand, founder of the ChatPersona AI chat service OnlyFans. “We built our own model using data from multiple creators’ conversations.”
Since launching last year, ChatPersona has about 6,000 customers, according to Anand, a mix of individuals and agencies.
Anand says ChatPersona doesn’t technically violate OnlyFans’ terms of service because it requires people to repeatedly click “send” on the messages its AI chatbots generate OnlyFans has banned the use of AI chatbots despite that current terms of service don’t mention AI chatter 🙂
OnlyFans did not respond to repeated requests for comment.
The field is already quite crowded. Some of the more popular tools have on-the-nose names like FlirtFlow, ChatterCharms, and Botly. Another competitor, the relatively generic name Supercreator, has a suite of AI tools, from AI-generated scripts to an assistant called Inbox Copilot. algorithmically sorts the scripts, moving the “spenders” to the top of the list and ignoring the “freeloaders”.
Eden, a former creator of OnlyFans who now runs a boutique agency called Heiss Talent (and who spoke on the record using only his first name, citing privacy concerns), is an enthusiastic adopter of the technology , that they all use Supercreator’s AI tools. “That’s crazy sales growth because you can target people based on their spending,” he says.
