Ravichandran Ashwin He has been one of the loyal servants of Indian Cricket for ten years. During his time with the national team, he was a name synonymous with stability and reliability in the team. However, the brilliant career of this genius is respected not only among the Indian cricketers but also by the legends of the world. One such giant of world cricket is Muttiah Muralitharanwho recently expressed his interest in Ashwin’s glorious career.
The legendary Sri-Lankan off spinner in an interview with Telecom Asia Sport (telecomasia.net) was asked about Ashwin announcing his retirement from international cricket after the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy Gabba Test. Recalling the times when he first saw Ashwin as a young spinner trying to make a mark, Muralitharan said, “I was at the end of my career when he came on the scene but he struck me as a smart young man eager to learn. He asked for advice, asked thoughtful questions, and worked hard to get to know each other better. Speed and hunger are what set him apart.”
Additionally, Muralitharan also spoke about the beginning of Ashwin’s career, when he was testing his luck as a batsman, the legend added, “You have to remember that Ashwin started his batting career, practicing bowling as a short-term solution. He soon realized that the writing was on the wall for his batting ambitions and turned his attention to bowling. Let’s avoid it by making a bold pivot and achieving what he has. Reaching Test wickets 500 is no walk in the park.“
Muralitharan has become the most successful player in world cricket as the only player with 800 wickets in Test Cricket. The Sri Lankan batsman has managed only 133 Tests.
When it comes to numbers, Ashwin is one of the best Indian batsmen to ever play the game. The Chennai lad managed to take 537 wickets in Tests, 156 wickets in ODIs and 72 wickets in the T20I format. This makes him the second Indian wicket-taker in cricket, second only to him Anil Kumbe. Ashwin also helped the batsmen score 3503 Test runs in 6 years.
