Liverpool ‘close to perfection’ against Man City… but boss laments missed opportunity

Arne Slot has admitted that he did not expect such an impressive start for Liverpool after seeing his side move nine points clear at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Manchester City.

Cody Gakpo’s strike as part of a great display in the first half saw the Reds on course for a sixth straight victory which was sealed when Mohamed Salah fired in a late winner.

“I don’t think anyone, including me, would have predicted this (start),” Slot told Sky Sports after watching Liverpool win 14 times in a 15-game unbeaten run.

“I knew (before) Jurgen (Klopp) left the team in a good place. However, against all the teams we have played… we are not the only ones (championship contenders). I saw Arsenal (won 5-2 at West Ham) yesterday and City will be back. “

Liverpool vs Man City: Reds ‘had the power’

City are looking for a fifth title in a row and would have finished top in the last seven seasons, but Klopp’s side have surpassed them in 2019/20.

Slot, who took over in the summer after Klopp’s nine-year reign came to an end, led Liverpool to a shock victory against their fourth consecutive league defeat.

“The amount of chances we missed made it tough at the end,” said Slot, who saw Salah join the spoils as he hit a one-on-one header.

“But maybe it’s good for a game like this. It should be like this. It would have been better to score the second goal earlier.

“I would have liked to have seen the second half match the first half. But the quality of the other team… if you want to win against City, you have to be perfect in all aspects of the game.

“We came close to perfection; we were not perfect but we came close to perfection. It’s the only way to defeat City. We always work hard but they are very good at building, so you have to work hard.

“Our players were strong. Apart from our players, the crowd was good today. “

Liverpool games

Liverpool face two away games next week, visiting Newcastle on Wednesday (7.30pm GMT) and Everton on Saturday (12.30pm).

“We’re a close team and it’s hard to beat us,” Slot said. “But we also have to work hard. We have injuries. We had to get Trent (Alexander-Arnold) off.

“It would have been dangerous (to keep him). These are the challenges we face at the moment, but every team has to face these challenges over time. Next week is another big week.”
