after Invisible man and: Abigail, Universal has another modern take on one of its classic monsters hitting theaters, though Leigh Whannell’s took a while to make Wolf Man, it’s here in about a month, and a new behind-the-scenes clip digs into the film’s many inspirations.
In the film, Whannell readily admits that he used the film to explore “infection and transformation,” themes that have been at the heart of werewolf stories, but his spin carries some additional weight; he wrote the script in 2020, during that time early epidemic daysso the film can’t help but also talk about how illnesses cause feelings of “isolation, fear and anxiety”. Blake, our ultimate werewolf played by Christopher Abbott, is attacked by a werewolf and gradually turns into a monster as his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) watch on. having… spend the rest of their night running around away from him.
Similarly, the director considers Wolf Man an homage to two of his favorite ’80s body horror movies, The thing and: It to fly. Those films also explore the fear of someone becoming (or close to) something out of control and dangerous. It’s a bit of a different spin for Whannell, who has been in the horror game since the original saw but moves like lower and: Refresh focus on the terror of demonic possession or an evil, manipulative being. He likes to use terror “really deep in someone’s subconscious” and with wolf man he aims to provide an “auditory assault” and deliver the audience “something terrifying and sinister”.
We’ll see if his bite is as scary as his bark seems Wolf Man in theaters on January 17, 2025.
