Jamie Foxx reveals he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke

Jamie Foxx broke his silence during his new Netflix comedy special about what led to his mysterious health scare — and how he’s doing now.

Fox, 56, opened up about his previous hospitalization during Jamie Foxx: What happened waswhich premiered on Tuesday, December 10. Fox revealed that he had a brain bleed that led to a stroke after experiencing a severe headache in April 2023.

The special was originally taped in October — nearly two years after Fox experienced a medical complication while filming Back to action in Atlanta. his eldest daughter, Corinne FoxShe then revealed that “due to quick action and great care” her father “is already on the road to recovery”. “I want you to see me laughing, partying, making a joke, doing a movie, a TV show. I didn’t want you to see me with tubes coming out of me trying to figure out if I was going to pass,” he continued. “I can’t tell you how great it feels to have your family come in like that and you know they kept it tight, they didn’t release anything, they protected me, and that’s what I hope everyone could accept in moments like this.”

Jamie returned to the stage a month later for his first stand-up show since being released from the hospital.

Jamie then told the audience that “my heart and soul are filled with pure joy” after filming the Netflix special, which he teased would give him “a chance to tell my side of the story”.

“We still don’t know what happened to me,” Fox said during the special, describing how he experienced a severe headache on April 11, 2023. He asked a friend for some aspirin but, “before I could get the aspirin, I was out.”

“I don’t remember 20 days. What they told me was that they took me to the first doctor and that first doctor gave me a cortisone shot and sent me home,” he continued. “What the hell is this? I don’t know if you can Yelp for doctors, but it’s half a star, n-a,” he joked.

His sister asked for a second opinion

Fox shared how his younger sister, Deirdre Dixonwhom he described as “4-foot-11 of nothing but love,” did not receive the first doctor’s treatment. “She says, ‘Put him in the car. That’s not my brother over there,'” Fox recalled, explaining that his sister eventually drove him to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

At the hospital, a doctor told the Oscar winner’s sister, “He has a cerebral hemorrhage that led to a stroke.” Fox said, “He said, ‘If I don’t get inside his head now, we’re going to lose him.'”

“They take me to be operated on, and my sister came down outside the operating room and prayed the whole time,” he continued, joking that he didn’t “see the light” but “saw the tunnel.” He added, “It was hot in the tunnel. (I thought) ‘Sh-t, I’m going to the wrong place in this mother – eh?'”

Fox reveals he had a stroke

After operating on the brain bleed, the doctor told Fox’s sister that he had experienced a stroke. “‘Maybe he can make a full recovery but this is going to be the worst year of his life,'” the doctor told Fox’s sister.

“It is what it is, Atlanta. You finally get the story,” Fox said, confused with emotion.

How his daughter helped his recovery

“My vitals were so bad they thought they were going to lose me,” Fox said of the first 15 days after his medical emergency. “Then a miracle happened, and this miracle worked through my young daughter,” he added, referring to 15-year-old Anneliese.

“I didn’t want her to see me like that. She snuck into my hospital room with her guitar, and she’s like, ‘I know what my dad needs,'” Fox recalled, saying that while his daughter played guitar, his vitality stabilized. He then introduced Annelise to the stage to play her guitar.

Why did he disappear from the public eye?

Fox praised his sister and daughter, Corinne, 30, for springing into action following his stroke. “They held my fk down. ‘No one sees it!’ They cut everything off,” he said. “They didn’t want you to see me like that and I didn’t want you to see me like that. There’s also another reason why my daughter didn’t want anyone to see me. I was dizzy from the stroke. I was so dizzy, so my head was (shaking). She said, ‘ They’re goin’ to suck the fk out of that mother – ah’.”

Fox detailed how he awoke from his coma after 20 days to find himself in a wheelchair. At first he struggled to accept the fact that he had suffered a stroke. “I said, ‘This is an old man. I’m not having a stroke. Stop this crazy prank,'” he recalled.

“They flew me to Chicago for my rehab,” he continued. “Every therapist that came in, I said, ‘Get the fuck out.’ I gave up.”

Eventually, a physical therapist named Holly gave him some tough love and got him started on the mend.

Atlanta saved his life…

Taking the stage at Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre, Fox said, “Just 400 yards from here, at Piedmont Hospital, they put me back together. To God be the glory.”

But the internet tried to kill him

“They said I was paralyzed. Said I couldn’t walk. But look at me now,” he chuckled, dancing to Unk’s “Walk It Out.”

Later, detailing how he couldn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel while he was in a coma, he joked that he saw Didi at the end. “I thought I saw the devil. Or was it swollen?” he whined. “I’m walking around. But if it was Pappy, he’d have a burning bottle of Johnson & Johnson (baby oil).
