first child Hunter Biden he said Sunday after his father, President Joe Biden, forgave him that he has “taken responsibility” for his mistakes that have been “exploited to publicly humiliate and embarrass me and my family for political sport.”
Hunter Biden, 54, was convicted in two separate federal cases earlier this year: He was first found guilty in June of three felony counts of federal gun violations and pleaded guilty in September to one separate tax
“I have admitted and taken responsibility for my mistakes during the darkest days of my addiction, mistakes that have been used to publicly humiliate and shame me and my family for the sport of politics,” Hunter Biden said in a statement to Fox News. “Despite all of this, I have maintained my sobriety for over five years thanks to my deep faith and the unwavering love and support of my family and friends.”
“In the midst of addiction, I wasted many opportunities and advantages,” he continued. “In recovery we can be given the opportunity to make amends where possible and rebuild our lives if we never take for granted the mercy we have been given. I will never take for granted the mercy I have been given today and I will dedicate my life to help those who are still sick and suffering.”
BIDEN SORRY SON HUNTER BIDEN IN FRONT OF THE WHITE HOUSE EXIT
The president’s pardon for his son, announced by the White House on Sunday night, applies to crimes against the United States that Hunter Biden “committed or may have committed” from January 1, 2014 to on December 1, 2024.
“Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter,” Biden said in a statement. “From the day I took office, I said I would not interfere with the Department of Justice’s decision-making, and I kept my word even as I watched my son be selectively and unfairly prosecuted.”
The outgoing president she also argued that her son was “treated differently” in his criminal cases.
“Without aggravating factors such as use in a crime, multiple purchases, or buying a gun as a straw buyer, people are almost never brought to trial on felony charges simply because of how they filled out a form weapons,” the statement said. “Those who were late on their taxes due to serious addictions, but later paid them back with interest and penalties, typically receive non-criminal settlements. Clearly, Hunter was treated differently.”
President Biden further said that the cases against his son only came about because of Republican opposition to him and his victory in the 2020 election against President-elect Donald Trump.
“The charges in their cases came only after several of my political opponents in Congress urged them to attack me and oppose my election,” the president said. “Then a carefully negotiated plea agreement, agreed to by the Department of Justice, was unleashed in the courtroom, with a number of my political opponents in Congress thanking themselves for exerting political pressure on the process. If the deal of statement had been upheld, it would have been a fair and reasonable resolution of Hunter’s cases.”
BIDEN WILL NOT PARDON HUNTER, WHITE HOUSE REAFFIRMS, BUT CRITICS NOT SO SURE
“No reasonable person looking at the facts of Hunter’s cases can come to any conclusion other than that Hunter was singled out only because he is my son, and that is wrong,” he continued. “There has been an effort to break Hunter, who has been five and a half years sober, even in the face of relentless attacks and selective prosecutions. In trying to break Hunter, they’ve tried to break me, and there’s no reason to do it. I think it will stop there.”
The president also blamed “crude politics” for the prosecutions of his son.
“Throughout my career I have followed a simple principle: Just tell the truth to the American people,” he said. “They will be fair. This is the truth: I believe in the justice system, but while I have struggled with it, I also believe that crude politics has infected this process and led to a miscarriage of justice, and once I did that. decision this weekend, there was no point in delaying it any longer.”
He concluded: “I hope the American people will understand why a father and a president would make this decision.”
A court document obtained by Fox News showed Hunter Biden signed his name to a legal acknowledgment of the pardon.
President Biden’s decision to pardon his son is a departure from multiple statements he made to the media over the summer that he would not pardon the first son.
