‘He was very involved’ – Postecoglou responds to criticism of Romero’s Spurs

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has responded to defender Cristian Romero’s criticism of the club, saying “a lot of what (Romero) said was good and some of what he said was wrong.”

Following Spurs’ 4-3 loss to Londoners Chelsea on Sunday, Romero, in an interview with Telemundo Deportes, he complained that the club was running out of money and complained that the club is about to withdraw their Premier League players due to lack of funds.

Ahead of Tottenham’s Europa League clash with Rangers at Ibrox on Thursday, Postecoglou was asked to comment on his player’s comments.

“He (Romero) was obviously very involved, he is a leader in the club and (because of the injury) he was not able to help us,” said the Spurs boss.

“I think it was his way of trying to help us and the team by saying that we are facing difficulties but he believes in what we are doing.

“And part of it, maybe they did it wrong. He has a desire to do well in this group and his description may not have been accurate.

“Most of what he said was good and some of what he said was not correct and should not be done in public. I have already spoken to the Christian about this matter.”

Without Romero, Micky van de Ven and Ben Davies due to injury, Postecoglou also admitted that his team’s current injury crisis is the most difficult of his professional career.

“It’s no secret, we’re short in terms of intelligence and positional knowledge,” Postecoglou said.

“That’s what we’re trying to deal with.”

The former Celtic boss is delighted to be back in Glasgow but knows the welcome he will receive from the Rangers club will not be a warm one.

“When the pictures came out it was the most exciting thing for me because of my history here,” Postecoglou said.

“I have a good idea of how difficult it is to play Rangers here in front of so many people. But at the same time it’s fun.

“It is an important game for both teams. A good score gives you a better way to the knockout stages.

“I think everyone knows how to receive me.”
