Dick Van Dyke He praised the kindness of his neighbors for helping him evacuate a dangerous fire in California.
Back at his residence in Malibu, Van Dyke, 99, opened up to me NBC News on Thursday, December 12, for running away from the property with his wife, Arlene Silver.
“I forgot how old I was, and I realized I was crawling to get out,” he recalled, noting that he tried to prevent the fire by pouring water on his house using “a fire hose that connects to my pool.” But his efforts were of no avail.
“I thought, like, ‘I’m not going to make it out of here,’ because I was trying to crawl to the car,” he shared. “I exhausted myself. I couldn’t get up.”
Fortunately, Van Dyck said, “three neighbors came and carried me and came back and put out a small fire in the guest house and saved me. Thank God for them.”
The interview with NBC News included security camera footage showing Van Dyke, Silver, 53, and their pets evacuating their home with the help of their neighbors. Thanks to their quick actions, Van Dyke returned to his home full of Hollywood memorabilia for his milestone 99th birthday on Friday, December 13.
“I don’t think I would have succeeded,” he told the news outlet. “God bless them and thank you for saving my life.”
Earlier this week, Van Dijk shared through Facebook that he and his wife had Escaped the fires safely But they were missing their cat named Bobo. “We pray that he will be okay and that our community at Sierra Retreat will survive these terrible fires,” he wrote. The actor later confirmed in a comment to the post that the couple and their cat are back home and safe.
Van Dijk is one of several stars affected by the wildfires, incl minister and Mira Sorvino. “To all my friends and neighbors in Malibu I pray you stay safe,” Sorvino, 57, wrote. through X on Tuesday, December 10. “We evacuated in the middle of the night, children and pets are all responsible! Scary times!!”
Jane Seymour also confirmed that she and her family were safe after evacuating their home while sharing photos of the fires via Instagram. “My thoughts are with everyone still hurt, with the brave firefighters who risk everything to protect us, and many who call Malibu home,” she wrote in a presentation on Tuesday. “Let’s continue to support each other, stay informed and stay hopeful. Our community is strong, and together we will get through this challenging time.”
Seymour, 73, went on to thank the first responders for the surveillance Instagram post on Wednesday, December 11. “We are so grateful to the amazing firefighters and the amazing group of volunteer firefighters in Malibu who risk everything to protect our homes and our community,” she wrote alongside more photos and footage of fires. “This fire reminds us of the strength, courage, resilience and compassion that bind us together in the most difficult times. Let’s continue to support and uplift each other, as we always do.”
She concluded: “To everyone fighting the flames and keeping us safe, thank you. Your courage is extraordinary.”
