In a shocking twist, Team India support member Nuwan Seneviratne was hit on the head by a cricket ball on the course. This happened while the Indian national cricket team was gearing up at the Gabba on the second day of the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-2025.
The third Test between India and Australia began on Saturday, December 14, at the Gabba in Brisbane. Team India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bowl first, leading to criticism. Only 13.2 overs were possible on the opening day of the Test due to incessant rain.
During the practice, Nuwan Seneviratne, India’s best sniper, was injured after being hit in the head. Seneviratne was helping the team by throwing balls on the ground when he fell on the field. The Indian team and support staff rushed to help.
Seneviratne remained on the ground for a few minutes before taking off with ice pressed to his face. The incident highlighted the dangers associated with the education sector.
Sports journalist Tom Morris went on television, writing: ‘An Indian cricketer was hit on the head by a cricket ball while bowling. He was wearing a baseball glove and may not have seen the throw or been misjudged.
‘The players rushed to check on him. Medical staff are now with him. After five minutes or so he was up on his feet with ice on his right cheek/jaw. Scary stuff.’

On Day 2 of the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba, Jasprit Bumrah picked up two crucial wickets, removing Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney. Play resumed after rain interrupted Day 1, with only 13.2 overs bowled. Bumrah struck early, with Khawaja blocking one behind Rishabh Pant.
Nitish Kumar Reddy removed Marnus Labuschagne, who scored 12 off 55 balls. The Australian batsman tried to play with Nitish Kumar but was stopped behind the stumps. Virat Kohli, who stood at second slip, completed a strong catch. India ended the 37-run stand between Marnus and Steve Smith.
A blast from batter Travis Head connected with Smith after Labuschagne was dismissed. Smith and Head completed a stand of 50, and the left-handed batsman also reached his half-century. At the time of writing, the Australian cricket team was 162/3 in 58 overs, with Travis Head (52) and Steve Smith (46) at the crease.
