Marvel has sparked serious fan interest with news that Robert Downey Jr. will be returning to the MCU in Judgment DayBut not as Tony Stark… instead, he’ll somehow play Fantastic Four villain Doctor Doom. Since then, it’s been reported that Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell will also return, and while most fans assume they’ll star similarly in Variants, a tantalizing Marvel fan theory says otherwise. According to this theory by Reddit user WillemDaFriends, their part in the movie will take place in the alternate past Steve Rogers traveled to. the end of the gameand his temporary hatreds created the alternate Earth setting of The Fantastic Four.

To understand the role of Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell’s characters in this Marvel theory, you may need a primer on both the past and the future of this cinematic universe. on the end of the gameCaptain America used the Quantum Realm to travel through the past and retrieve each Infinity Stone from where it came from. How much suffering would the MCU be spared if someone could warn them of Hydra infiltrating SHIELD or the arrival of Thanos? It’s easy to imagine Cap doing everything he can to save lives and in the process creating a very different universe, both because of his direct actions and because different scientists will be able to study the super soldier serum that runs through his veins.
Admittedly, it is Chris Evans Marvel lore isn’t perfect… it doesn’t explain, for example, why the elderly Steve Rogers shows up at the end the end of the game When he is supposed to be stuck in another dimension. Of course, we can see some stories in time-wimey at work, and the events of The Fantastic Four: First Steps and the avengers: Judgment Day Maybe that would explain his appearance. Either way, we really want this theory to be true, because it would mean seeing the “real” Cap and Peggy in the upcoming film and not another meaningless multi-purpose variant or disappointing fake.
