Delivering dinner turned out to be an interesting experience for the Delhi resident, who shared an interesting story of a Zomato executive who works hard to support his family. The encounter inspired him to reach out to Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal with a heartfelt plea for change.
Delhi resident Himanshu Bohra ordered it at 3 am, not knowing that the delivery would bring him face to face with a man whose story would leave him “deeply shaken.”
“Yesterday after I finished my work at around 3 am, I ordered my food through Zomato. When the doorbell rang, I got up to open it. There he was, Shiva Sarkar, the delivery manager, smiling warmly even though it was freezing outside,” he said in his letter.
The delivery manager, Shiva Sarkar, a young man in his early 20s, arrived at Bohra’s door smiling despite the cold weather. However, his eyes had a calm load, because he was only thinking about the story he was waiting to be told.
“There was something in his eyes – a heaviness, an incredible struggle,” Bohra said.
Moved by his behavior, Bohra invited Shiva inside and offered him a cup of water. During their conversation, Shiva opened up about his life. After losing his father, he dropped out of school in the 8th grade to support his family. Now, he works late into the night to bring food, uses his money to save for his younger brother’s wedding, carries the weight of his responsibilities.
“Shiva, aged around 20-21, broke down in tears while narrating his story. He had to drop out of school after finishing 8th grade when his father died. The weight of responsibility forced him to take up this job to support his family,” said Bohra.
He added, “His dreams of education, carefree youth, were replaced by long nights and the heavy burden of ensuring that his sisters get married next year. I sat there, in awe of his strength. This young man, who should have chased his passions, instead runs time to earn a living, and a determination that can be changed.”
The encounter left Bohra thinking about the sacrifices made by many administrators like Shiva, who put aside their dreams to solve their families’ problems.
“As we talked, I couldn’t stop thinking—how many Shivas are out there? Young people give up their education, their ambitions, and their abilities so that their families can get ahead,” Bohra shared in his story.
As Shiva left with a smile and a heartfelt “Thank you,” Bohra was left struggling with a whirlwind of emotions. “What can we do for them? Could Zomato, with its many powers, consider introducing skills development, training, or credit programs to support the unsung heroes?” He suggested.
Bohra turned his heartfelt sentiment into a call to action, speaking to Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal directly in his office.
He wrote, “Deepinder Goyal, I appreciate the Zomato program, but can we do more? Can we, as a society, support these people who quietly carry the weight of the world on their young shoulders?”
Accompanied by a picture of Shiva—shared with his permission—the post made a big impact and quickly went viral, sparking a lot of discussion on the Internet.
Zomato was quick to accept the post. “Hey Himanshu, thanks for your interest. This looks very encouraging, and we are proud of our delivery ecosystem. If possible, please help us with the order ID via private message so we can thank our delivery partner,” said Zomato.
