By last Tuesday my sciatica symptoms were feeling much better so I was getting overconfident. I rode for 90 minutes, and about 50 minutes I rode upright instead of lying down, including a lot of standing pedaling. Everything was great. Then when I got home my sciatica flared up significantly, pretty much from day one. My doctor squeezed me into a virtual appointment and prescribed anti-inflammatories, rest (abstain from almost all exercise except stretching for a week), and ice. I also scheduled lumbar x-rays to rule out sciatica from the spine, and a follow-up appointment with a new orthopedist found by my general practitioner.
Here is a quote from when the first flare-up occurred two weeks ago: “I think the lesson from this is that I should have taken it a lot easier and made sure I made a full recovery from the 9/18 injury. Instead, as soon as I started feeling better, I became confident and dived back into long hard workouts, forgetting that us old people take longer to heal.!” It’s amazing how quickly I forgot about it as soon as I felt better. Aerobic exercises are like therapy for me, “meditation in motion”. But it only takes about 30 minutes. So this time, as soon as I’m allowed, I’ll stick to 30 minutes a day for at least a month or the symptoms will be there completely gone.
