The actress, 32, stars on OWN’s Mistletoe and marriage and her character, Olivia’s love interest, Isaiah (Etienne Morris), has a few tricks up his sleeves (literally) to try to win her back.

“He said he lived near—do you know that Magic Castle in Los Angeles.? Apparently growing up, Etty lived next door to the founder of this,” Chestnut said, referring to Los Angeles’ famous Magic Castle, where guests can enjoy dinner and a magician’s show. “Isn’t that wild?”

She continued: “If I remember correctly, it was the founder or their child. Either way they lived nearby, and he was already close to, like, the wizarding world. So he already had a foot in that way.”

While Olivia finds great success in Chicago, she is faced with Sister Rosemary (Asha James) and her future sister-in-law Gwen (Krista Nazier) best friend, Isaiah, who happens to be Olivia’s ex-boyfriend.

After years of putting her love life on the line – partly because of the breakup with Isiah and because her mother fell and needed extra help around the house – Olivia must decide what she really wants from a relationship. Throw in some holiday mishaps, magic and, of course, romance, and Olivia’s plate is full.

For Chestnut, be the Christmas movie heads was on her “bucket list”, but the character’s “goal-oriented” mindset and ability to care “very much” about her family are what really drew her to the role.

Chestnut noted that as Olivia’s journey unfolds and she remembers her dream of becoming a travel destination wedding planner, fans will grow to love her even more. Especially since it’s about Olivia finding her voice and possible love.

The actress teased that there are “little nuggets” throughout the film that hint at Olivia becoming an empowered woman. Chestnut said us Isaiah is doing his best to be the “confidence booster” Olivia needs to stand up to her sister and put herself first.

When it comes to her family, Chestnut explained that it’s always “family first” which is similar to her personality. “But you also have to take care of yourself and take care of yourself too. Because if you’re not 100 percent, how can you really bring that to anyone else in your life that you really care about?”

Although Chestnut hinted that Olivia will find balance in her life, when it comes to a future with her ex-boyfriend, he played coy about the ending.

“I think Olivia goes back and forth. She sees the possibility of, ‘Oh, let’s travel the world, you know, do these destination weddings,’ but she’s also scarred by this man she trusted,” she explained. “It’s like, ‘How can you go back and how do you rebuild the trust we had in the past?'”

Whatever the outcome, Chestnut said she wants viewers to give the “heartwarming” and “inspiring” film centered on “love, faith and hope” a real sink in this holiday season.

“We’re all connected in many ways. I think that’s why people really like Christmas movies because it’s the time of year when… people in general are just filled with the spirit of kindness,” she concluded.
