Liverpool manager Arne Slot has offered support to left-back Andy Robertson after he received a costly red card Saturday draws 2-2 with Fulham.
Robertson was shown a straight red card just 17 minutes into the game after a last-man foul on Harry Wilson, failing to control an attempted follow-up before trying to stop a direct attack.
I am Liverpool already 1-0 down at the time, it left the Reds with a real mountain to climb and they needed a late strike from substitute Diogo Jota to salvage a point.
After the match, Slot argued that Robertson was trying to shake off a knock he had taken earlier in the match and may not have been in his best form when he faced Wilson’s attack.
“I think what the team showed, the quality they showed, that’s what Robbo showed,” Slot said. “Sometimes when you get hit like that, two blocks in the knee, that can hurt you for a few minutes. Then, if you just keep running, it’s fine and that’s what we were hoping for.
“Not least because I had only one defender on the bench, who was not a left-back. So, we expected him to be able to do it and I think he did well, but the moment I realized that he did it. He was not the only one who put the ball in the back and started running. .”
Slot continued: “He could only go back to Ali (Alisson), but I thought, ‘Okay, let’s see how this continues’ and I think it was too soon after that when he received the red card. his and two skins, unfortunately, led to a well-deserved red card.
As Robertson was sent off for denying a goal-scoring opportunity, rather than committing a violent crime, he will only be banned for one game and will therefore miss the midweek Carabao Cup quarter-final clash with Southampton.
