When someone had an idea turn a sandworm into a bucket of popcorn They had no idea what Dune was. Did they create a hilarious internet sensation? But they also set a trend that saw people going to theaters not just for the movies or the snacks, but also for the great collection.
For years, movie theaters have been looking for new, unique ways to bring people to the theater: IMAX, 4DX, 3D, etc. In 2024, they found the answer with the emergence of the Popcorn Bucket, a limited-edition set that could, in theory, be used to hold popcorn something for fans to buy and enjoy as a souvenir.Popcorn buckets aren’t new to movie theaters, or anywhere else, but 2024 kind of brought them into the spotlight and it all started with him You: Second part.
It You: Second part the popcorn bucket was just supposed to be a sandworm. But pretty quickly the internet realized it looked like a sex toy, and, well, no one would shut up about it. That meant other studios were definitely making popcorn buckets for movies like this Ghostbusters. Frozen Empire: and: Godzilla x Kong. A new empire, a whole new light shone upon them.
A few weeks later, Marvel Studios announced that the ever-offensive Deadpool had designed his own popcorn bucket. Deadpool & Wolverine and the Merc With the Mouth did not disappoint it turned out that Wolverine’s head, was coming out very suspiciously with his mouth wide open, and all bets were off.
And while Deadpool & Wolverine bucket was probably the most popular of the summer, personally we preferred the one that Disney released for Alien: Romulus which was big and fat… just an alien head.
As is usually the case, summer turns to fall, fall turns to winter, and since movie studios now had a few months to think about buckets of popcorn for their year-end releases, the buckets just kept coming. Gladiator II gave us the Roman Coliseum With an AR component. Nosferatu gave us a casket of popcorn. And even Sonic the Hedgehog boarded the shipperhaps with the only bucket feeling relatively normal.
The change at the end of the year is that buckets weren’t just for your mainstream blockbusters. Now we’re doing Oscar fare. Basically, as the title suggests, 2024 was the year of the popcorn . The only question is, can 2025 up the ante or will they go back to being lame?
