The Friedkin Group has completed its takeover of Everton

The Friedkin Group has taken over control of Everton, marking the end of the Farhad Moshiri era.

The deal, worth more than £400 million, makes Everton the 10th Premier League club to be under a majority American owner.

The deal between Moshiri and the Friedkin Group of Texas was completed on September 23, but final approval from the Premier League was needed before the takeover could be completed.

Led by chairman Dan Friedkin, the Friedkin Group also owns Serie A side AS Roma.

As part of the new administration, Friedkin is expected to become chairman of Everton’s board, while Marc Watts will take on the role of executive chairman, overseeing the club’s operations.

In an open letter to fans, Friedkin expressed his excitement about the purchase: “I am very proud to welcome one of the most famous football clubs in England to our international family, the Friedkin Group. Everton represents a proud heritage, and we are honored to be the stewards of this great organization.

“Although we are new to the club, we fully understand the important role that Everton plays in local culture, history, and the lives of Evertonians here and around the world.

“We are deeply committed to honoring this legacy while successfully supporting the community, economy, and people of this wonderful city.”

Farhad Moshiri, a British-Iranian businessman, first bought 49.9% of Everton in 2016 before increasing his ownership to 94.1% in 2022.

His reign was marked by financial expense and instability, as Everton struggled to play.

Everton, a club who have not been relegated since 1953-54, have endured three consecutive seasons without finishing well in the Premier League, finishing 16th, 17th, and 15th in the previous campaigns.

Currently sitting in 16th place, the team is facing another difficult season under manager Sean Dyche.

Representatives of the Friedkin Group are expected to attend Everton’s upcoming match against second-placed Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday.
