of ESPN Malika Andrews was candid about criticism she received of perceived racial bias in her reporting.
Andrews, 29, appeared on NBA All-Star DeMar DeRozanMental Health Talk Series by, Dinners with DeMarWhere is the NBA today and NBA countdown The host explained how she was forced to confront the narrative.
“The hardest part for me sometimes is telling lies, especially this one, ‘You hate black men,'” Andrews told DeRozan, 35. “That couldn’t be further from the truth. And using my family or what my family looks like as some kind of evidence of that It’s just not true and it’s just not nice.”
Andrews comes from mixed parents and Married to a fellow ESPN reporter Dave McMenaminwhich is white, in August.
“It hurts, and I think it’s okay to say sometimes. It hurts,” Andrews admitted. “It doesn’t matter if it’s someone credible or someone with a big platform or if it’s someone in their mom’s basement just shooting a post. Sometimes it hurts when it seeps in, especially for me when it’s not true.”
Former NFL wide receiver Dez Bryant Criticized Andrews during her coverage of the 2023 NBA draft, claiming she spent time discussing criminal charges filed against the draft pick Brandon Millerwhich is black, while not covering an alleged relationship between a minor pick and a draft pick Josh Giddywhite water
“I advise you not to make it a black or white thing,” Bryant, 36, posted through X at the time “Your parents really raised you wrong and just because you went to a private school doesn’t make you better. You’re an underdog and I know your type. You’re just a dummy. I don’t know how a former or current NBA player can sit there in front of you and look at you with any kind of respect.” .
While she strongly disagrees with views like Bryant’s, Andrews acknowledged that her journalistic record is not flawless.
“We all have jobs to do and we do our best — I try to do my best — show up every day in a way that you know what I’m about,” she told DeRozan. “It doesn’t mean I covered every story perfectly. It doesn’t mean I don’t make mistakes. But I think I’m pretty good at telling you especially, ‘It could have been better there.'”
She added, “As social media continues to get bigger in the world, that kindness and humanity I worry sometimes that we’re losing.”
