Leeds United’s decision to let Junior Firpo’s contract run into the final months has been described as “shocking” by Jon Newsome.
Firpo has emerged as a key player for Leeds since joining from Barcelona in 2021, scoring three goals and providing 15 assists in 100 games across all competitions.
This season alone, the defender has scored once and set up three goals in 15 Championship games.
However, his current deal at Elland Road is due to expire at the end of this season, with no new deal imminent.
Firpo himself put his future in doubt in November when he admitted he “has options” to leave Leeds United.
“Football is like that. One day you are here, the next day you are there. But this is a topic that I have been discussing since we were brought down,” the 28-year-old said. “Obviously, if I had done the same (as others who left), I would have left.
“I have my choices, I think everyone knows, it’s not something I can hide. I had my choices and I could leave, but as you say, my family is settled here. We’re doing very well at the moment, but we don’t know what the future holds for me.”
That such an important player’s contract has been allowed to slip so low can be a huge disappointment for Leeds fans.
Former Whites defender Newsome said the move was “amazing”, highlighting the quality Firpo brings and how he adapts.
“To be honest, I’m surprised that a football club allows any player to enter the final year of their contract,” said the BBC pundit. History of MOT Leeds).
“Even in the summer when things change, the club gets promoted to the Premier League, is he a Premier League player, who do you want to keep?
“If the team is not promoted, and the financial failure means that he has more wages – you can bring him down with money, then I think it’s amazing.”
