Seven tourists in Fiji hospital with suspected alcohol poisoning

Seven tourists from Fiji have been sent to hospital with suspected alcohol poisoning and are in a critical condition.

They are believed to have been drinking cocktails at a bar in the resort on Saturday night local time, and shortly afterwards showed nausea, vomiting and neurological symptoms.

Four of the seven are Australian, aged between 18 and 56, according to local media reports citing the health ministry.

The incident comes weeks after the death of six tourists in the Southeast Asian nation of Laos due to suspected methanol poisoning.

The Fijian tourists, who were reportedly staying at a resort on the Coral Coast, were initially taken to hospital in Sigatoka.

All were later taken to Lautoka Hospital, according to the Fiji Times.

Two Australian families in Fiji are receiving consular assistance, an Australian foreign ministry spokesman told the BBC.
