Like Manchester City looking to rebuild a struggling and aging line-up, those at The Etihad are reportedly planning a surprise move to avoid a repeat of what they did with Mateo Kovacic in 2023.

They’re not the only two to steal the headlines, however. According to Simon Phillips, Manchester City are currently preparing to sign Malo Gusto from Chelsea which would be a repeat of their deal to buy Kovacic from the Blues in 2023.
The right-back has played down any concerns about Reece James’ injury at Stamford Bridge, showing how solid he has been under Mauricio Pochettino and even more so under Enzo Maresca.
While Kyle Walker continues to endure a terrible campaign, Gusto represents an upgrade for Manchester City, who need to find a replacement for their struggling captain.
Unlike Kovacic, Chelsea may not be willing to part with Gusto to create an interesting battle if City decide to move in 2025.

Although it may be given how many problems they are facing at the moment, Manchester City have one weakness and that is their captain. Walker, now 34, is the oldest player and a mistake after making mistakes behind Guardiola. Now, more than ever, Gusto will be an instant upgrade on the aging protector.

It is surprising that the Chelsea defender has been found in the middle of Maresca, the Chelsea boss told the media. Fabrizio Romano at the beginning of this season: “A very good player. I’m very happy with Malo. He’s giving us a lot of things. He’s supporting the process in which we want to play more. He’s doing well, very well. For the years he has, he’s at the top.”
It may be scary, but City have welcomed players from Chelsea in the past and now they could get the chance to do so in the case of Gusto at a crucial time for those at The Etihad.
