Caroline Dubois was promoted to WBC lightweight world champion after Katie Taylor relinquished the belt.

Dubois became interim champion with a unanimous decision win over Maira Moneo in August and called for a rematch with Taylor for the title.

But the Irish legend’s decision to leave means Dubois will get the belt, and will make her first defense on January 11 – her 24th birthday – against former Canadian world title challenger Jessica Camara in Sheffield. Sky Sports.

Dubois was presented with the belt by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman at the governing body’s annual meeting in Hamburg on Wednesday.

“It’s a great honor to be both WBC world champions and to have WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman give me the belt,” said Dubois.

“It has always been my dream to become a world champion, and this is just the beginning of my journey. I look forward to defending my WBC title on January 11 in Sheffield.”

Since turning professional after competing in the Tokyo Olympics, Dubois has amassed a professional record of 10-0 with five knockouts.

The Londoner, who is the sister of IBF world heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois, has never struggled with the pros, but world champion Camara could give her a tough test.

Dubois’ agent Ben Shalom said: “We would like to thank WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman and the board of governors for promoting Caroline.

“The WBC lightweight championship is still active and in Caroline the WBC has a champion who can dominate for many years to come.

“We are just starting to see her true potential. We believe Caroline will be the future face of women’s boxing.”
