Ryan Garcia looks calm during his December 30 match against Rukiya Anpo in Japan. Garcia will fight Anpo in 19 days in Tokyo in a match that will be shown on Fanmio PPV for $49.99.
In the video, Ryan pulls up his pants to hide his Fury-esque tire that didn’t exist seven months ago. Apparently he has been eating a lot of pork since April 20th, and we are seeing visible results.
Garcia has picked up a pound for this fight, which will slow him down because he doesn’t look as fast as he did when he was a lightweight. This two minute rotation will be fast and can work in Anpo’s favor. They look so good. Anpo has a good target for his punches. Try Ryan’s medium.
In this week’s workout, Ryan (24-1, 20 KOs) has his pants pulled up in what appears to be a move to hide his flabby belly. It’s a move you often see with middle-aged men like Tyson Fury pulling their trunks to hide their stomachs. Seeing Ryan change this is amazing.
He looks like he’s around 160 lbs, but he’s carrying 20 extra pounds from the skinny fighter who beat Oscar Duarte a year ago on December 2, 2023.
Garcia has been weighing in since his last fight against Devin Haney on April 20. He came in 3.2 lbs heavier at 143.2 lbs and had to pay $600,000.
The added weight seemed to hinder Garcia from fighting in the rounds, and he took frequent breaks to recharge his batteries. He can handle this against Haney because he’s not a great shooter or grappler. But if Ryan is like that against one of the busy strikers, he’ll be out.
Some of the weight Ryan, 26, has put on doesn’t look like muscle, and that could be bad for him. Anpo, 6’0″, looks to be taking part in the show, and that could prove to be a challenge for the diminutive Garcia.
We saw how Anpo beat the 45-year-old Manny Pacquiao in their three-round showdown on July 28th in Saitama, Japan. Pacquiao earned every penny he earned in the match as he landed a huge punch on the 29-year-old Anpo.
Ryan will need to lose weight when his suspension expires in April 2025 because he doesn’t look like he does now. He doesn’t have the frame to fight at 154 and may not be strong enough to campaign at 147, either. He might do well at 147 against smaller fighters like Mario Barrios and Conor Benn, but he’ll be outmatched by Jaron Ennis and Eimantas Stanionis.
