Former NFL coach Bruce Arians offers advice to Bill Belichick as North Carolina football coaching rumors swirl

Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has spent much of the year NFL season in the media spotlight.

While Belichick interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons in January, the franchise opted not to extend an offer to a coach. Belichick didn’t seem to attract much interest from any other NFL teams, but his regular appearances on ESPN’s “ManningCast” and the CW’s “Inside the NFL” have kept him relatively close to football.

But the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach seems to still be interested in coaching.

During an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” earlier this week, Belichick confirmed that he had had conversations with the North Carolina Tar Heels about his head coaching vacancy.

While it’s still unclear whether Belichick will be on the sidelines in Chapel Hill next season, another former NFL coach weighed in developing situation.

Bruce Arians, who directed the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to the 2021 Super Bowl victory, he admitted he was “very surprised” that his contemporary showed interest in coaching at the college level. Arians also offered Belichick some advice.

“I’m very, very surprised. I thought for sure I would wait for the NFL recruiting process to play out,” Arians said during a recent appearance on the “Scoop City” podcast. “There are good things about being back in college, but I didn’t have patience with the rookies. I sure don’t have patience with the freshmen.”

Arians and Belichick are 72 years old. Arians stepped away from coaching and into a consulting role with the Bucs in 2022.

“If I’m going to give Bill one piece of advice, you better be very patient with yourself,” Arians said. “Dealing with the rookies making money, but now the freshmen are making money? It’s got to be ridiculous trying to coach these guys.”

Arians’ coaching career began at the college level. He spent time working Mississippi StateAlabama and other programs.

If Belichick ends up at UNC or another college program, he’ll have to carefully navigate the name, image and likeness (NIL) and transfer portal. The NCAA transfer portal opened earlier this week. NIL and the portal have dramatically altered the landscape of college football over the past two years.

Belichick shared some details about the makeup of a college program if he were a head coach.

“If I was in a college program, the college program would be a conduit to the NFL for players who had the ability to play in the NFL,” he said. “It would be a pro program — training, nutrition, scheme, training and techniques that would transfer to the NFL.”
