The leaders stretch the gap above nine points

Liverpool won 2-0 against Manchester City at Anfield, taking them top of the Premier League.

Cody Gakpo and Mohamed Salah were the heroes, each finding the net to ensure the hosts took all three points.

The game got off to a fast start, with Liverpool springing into action.

The Reds almost broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Virgil van Dijk’s powerful header from a corner hit the post.

However, it didn’t take long for Liverpool to capitalize on their strengths. A minute later, a wonderful move down the right saw Trent Alexander-Arnold cross the right path to Mohamed Salah.

The Egyptian, instead of shooting, unselfishly lifted the ball to Cody Gakpo, who raced home from close range to give Liverpool an early 1-0 lead.

Manchester City, who were defeated in the first round, struggled to find their rhythm.

Pep Guardiola’s side were on the defensive, a rare chance fell to Rico Lewis in the 39th minute, but his shot went wide.

The Reds went into the break with a deserved lead, having outplayed their visitors in almost every department.

Guardiola made changes at the break, introducing freshmen Jeremy Doku and Savinho to inject pace and flair into City’s attack.

The visitors saw the ball but had no way to test Liverpool striker Caoimhin Kelleher.

The turning point came in the 77th minute when Darwin Nunez, a recent substitute, forced City’s defense into a mistake.

Manuel Akanji’s weak header back to goalkeeper Stefan Ortega allowed Luis Díaz to pounce.

Ortega’s desperate strike dropped Diaz inside the box, leaving the umpire with no choice but to point to where it is.

Salah stepped up and converted the penalty, doubling Liverpool’s chances and all but winning.

Tempers flared late in the game when Salah and Bernardo Silva exchanged words after a challenge, but things ended well.

Manchester City’s frustrations were compounded when substitute Kevin De Bruyne was denied a superb double save from Kelleher in the 83rd minute.
