Kylian Mbappe has admitted he used the pain of missing a penalty in the 2-1 defeat by Athletic Club to motivate him recently.
The Frenchman has endured a difficult start to life with Real Madrid, not meeting his expectations and even his potential, and suffered a major setback earlier this month when he missed out on a draw against Bilbao, a week after doing the same against them. Liverpool.
Since then, Mbappe has shown real signs of improvement. He scored for Girona and impressed with the opening goal against Atalanta before getting injured, but returned to run the show in the 3-0 win over Pachuca in Qatar and impressed in the 4-2 win over Sevilla on Sunday.
“I can do more,” Mbappe said after the match. “I know I have more football in my legs than I show.
“But, as I said before, I have been doing well in the last few games. Bilbao has been good to me, because I hit a stone; missing the penalty… I realized that I have to sacrifice myself for this shirt. Play. and humanity.
“We know each other well, my arrival changed a lot in the team, but the changes as the coach said are over. I feel very good and you can see on the pitch that I understand all the other players. Well. And we are all playing very well now.”
Madrid Coach Carlo Ancelotti also continued to support Mbappe, laughing as he reminded reporters that he did not doubt the Frenchman despite the endless questions about his struggles.
“His transition period is over,” Ancelotti said. “You’ve proven that, sometimes, I’m right!
“He has been criticizing himself and, thanks to this attitude, he has been able to overcome a big problem. He is already showing his whole character.”
