Five first year MBBS students from Kerala’s Alappuzha Medical College lost their lives in a car accident on Monday night. According to the police, their car collided with a KSRTC bus near Alappuzha.
The people involved in the accident are Mohammed, Muhasin, Ibrahim, Devanand, and Shreedeep. The accident took place at 9 pm when their Tavera car, which was said to be speeding, lost control and hit a KSRTC bus traveling from Guruvayur to Kayamkulam. Eyewitnesses said that the crash tore apart the car, and threw the medical students onto the road.
Three medical students lost their lives at the accident site, while two others were injured on the way to Alappuzha Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, two other students have been admitted to the same hospital, and one is said to be seriously ill. Reports indicate that all 10 students were in the car at the time of the accident.
According to local people, Alappuzha Municipal Deputy Chairman PSM Hussain said the car tried to overtake another car after it braked, causing it to swerve and collide with an oncoming KSRTC bus. The students reportedly went to Kochi. “We are waiting for CCTV footage from the area, as the scene of the accident has surveillance cameras,” Hussain said.
The bus driver said that the car was going too fast, and the accident could not be avoided even though he tried to avoid the accident. Tavera’s car was completely destroyed. Traffic on the road was severely disrupted following the incident. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the crash, according to police reports.
The police and the traffic department have started an investigation into the accident. In a separate incident on December 1, an ambulance and a KSRTC state bus collided on the Punalur-Muvattupuzha State Highway, injuring eight people. The bus operates from Thiruvananthapuram to Pathanamthitta.
