Nalini Unagar, the Indian YouTuber behind the channel “Nalini’s Kitchen Recipe,” called it quits on YouTube after three years of unsuccessful attempts to turn her passion into profit.
In a series of posts on X, Unagar revealed that he invested ₹8 lakh in his channel but did not get any money. “I failed my YouTube business, so I’m selling all my kitchen equipment and studio gear,” he wrote. “I invested about ₹ 8 lakhs in building a kitchen, buying studio equipment, and upgrades. Return? ₹0.”
Over three years, Unagar produced 250 videos and collected 2,450 subscribers. Despite their best efforts, they have struggled with YouTube’s approach, which they say favors certain creators and types of content.
“YouTube didn’t give me anything. It sounds like the platform is biased, leaving some unrecognized despite their efforts,” he said.
How Does One Make Money On YouTube?
YouTube earnings depend on several factors:
Advertising Fees
Number of Listeners
Views from countries like the US or the UK earn more money than those from India.
An engagement
More likes, comments, and shares can increase the value of a video.
Streams of Income
Affiliate marketing, sponsored content, product sales, and channel memberships are common ways manufacturers increase advertising revenue.
The Most Profitable
Big names like Bhuvan Bam and Amit Bhadana earn between ₹11.6 lakh to ₹1.7 crore a month, while the average Indian producer earns ₹4.17 lakh a year.
The Cost of Running a YouTube Channel
Starting a YouTube channel can be cheap but growing it often requires a lot of money.

Financial Difficulties
Making money on YouTube is not guaranteed. To join the YouTube Partner Program, creators must have at least 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours in the last year. However, low views, unappealing content, or limited ad content can hinder acquisition.
Unagar’s experience also shows the dangers of relying solely on YouTube as a career. “Your store may close before you wake up the next day,” he said, referring to the platform’s mysterious algorithms.
How does one manage ‘bias’?
To succeed on YouTube, creators must prioritize creating high-quality content that delivers value to their audience when it matters and at the right time. Attractive headlines, accurate banners, and well-optimized metadata, such as keyword-rich descriptions and relevant hashtags, improve searches and impressions. Audience participation is important, so asking questions, responding to comments, and using things like flashcards and visuals can encourage interaction.
Experimenting with different formats, from YouTube Shorts to the most important series, helps to attract the audience and the strategy of the platform. Consistency is key – have a regular recording schedule and testing time for maximum impact. Producers should maximize their use of social media to reach more audiences while using YouTube Analytics to improve their strategies based on audience performance and audience engagement.
More awareness of YouTube’s rules and features through official channels and creative teams will lead to changes in the environment.
